What is a USI?
The USI is a new initiative put in place by the Australian Government, Department of Industry and applies to all students across Australia and to all training providers.
The objective of the USI is to provide Australian students with a lifelong number where training outcomes and achievements of every student can be individually captured centrally, kept secure and accessed on demand by the student or by training provider as needed.
Your USI will link to a secure online account that contains all your training records and results that you complete from commencement of the USI being 1 January 2015 onwards.
All students must have a USI before a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as STP can issue a Statement of Attainment (SoA) or Qualification Certificate upon the successful completion of training.

The USI is available online at no cost to the student. Once a participant has registered their USI, it will stay with them for life and be recorded with any nationally recognised VET course that is completed from 1 January 2015.

Who needs a USI and why?
All students studying nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training courses in Australia from 1 January 2015 will be required to have a (USI). Training providers must record a USI for all students under Commonwealth legislation and the conditions of registration for training organisations. A valid USI, verified by STP, will be required to be able to issue a statement of attainment or qualification to a student undertaking nationally recognised training.

How do participants get a USI?
It is free to register a USI, and only takes a few minutes online at www.usi.gov.au. The participant must give STP their USI when they enrol for Nationally Recognised Training to be delivered from 1 January 2015, as well as provide STP with access to their USI account for verification that their USI is correct.

What if a participant does not have a USI, or has not had it verified?
STP is prohibited by law to issue your Statement of Attainment or Qualification for NRT unless we have verified your USI. STP may accept the participant’s enrolment, deliver the training & accept payment, but must not issue the Statement of Attainment until the USI has been verified as correct.

Need more information? If you have further questions regarding the USI, please visit the USI website or ask our staff.
